Course Description MUSC 115 - Gospel Choir: Performs gospel music drawn from both traditional and contemporary sources. Performance opportunities for both singers and instrumentalists. Concerts given on and off campus each term. May be repeated for credit.
Credits: 0.00 or 1.00 This course is designed to introduce you to and assist you in performing different styles of Gospel Music. During any given term you will be exposed to music categorized as Anthems, Hymns, Negro Spirituals, Praise and Worship, Traditional, Contemporary or Urban Gospel. Music presented will be written by both recorded and unrecorded artists. Presentations may be made by students, guest artists and/or the director. The choir performs this music regularly in churches, on-campus and in numerous venues off-campus. Course Requirements You are expected to attend all rehearsals and engagements. You will receive an Engagement List at the beginning of the term. If an engagement is added, it will be voted upon by the choir to be added to the list. The grading structure is based on participation and attire. If at any point in time you are unable to participate, you must contact the director prior to the engagement or rehearsal. Fall Concert

Annual campus concert which present the Gospel choir in Full Concert. The choir will present both old and new material. Performances are also given my the Praise Dancers and the Mimes.

Evening of African American Music

Each year the Gospel Choir presents a concert in tribute to our great African American Gospel Music heritage. The gospel choir has presented the works of artists such as Edwin and Walter Hawkins, Milton Brunson, Timothy Wright, Rosie Wallace Brown, Barbara Ward Farmer, Ronald King, Robert J. Fryson  and Gregory Ross. The choir has also presented different genres within Gospel music focusing concerts on Praise and Worship music, Spirituals and Hymns.

 

Also performing at this concert is the Jazztet Band and periodically the String Ensemble.

 

Anniversary Concert

Each year the choir presents itself as well as guest artist from around the Tri-State area in a concert of celebration for anther year the Lord has brought us. The location varies from year to year , but it is always held in the Drexel Community Area. The mimes and praise dancers are also featured.

 

Nite of Ministries

Annual concert featuring the Gospel Choir, Praise Dancers, Mimes and performances by individual members of the choir. If you enjoy the large choir sound, as well as, the performance by smaller groups and solos, meet us in Mandell Theater. This concert is known to include spoken word, dancing, pantomime and, of course, singing.

Spring Tour

A weekend music tour normally held the third weekend in May. It is an over night trip in which the choir goes to another state/city/country and ministers in song and dance over a weekend period. Past tours have included but not limited to: Washington DC, New York, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, California, Canada and Jamaica.
